Expect delay for tax refund
Many North Carolina taxpayers will soon experience a delay in the return of their income tax refunds, as the state holds on to the money a little longer during the tight budget times.
Ken Lay, the revenue secretary, said the move is necessary to make sure the state has enough cash on hand to pay its bills between now and the end of the June 30 fiscal year.
…So far, Lay said, the state has returned 590,000 refund checks worth $406 million compared with 279,000 refund checks worth $263.9 million this time last year.
…he said there would likely be future delays, although he could not predict their length.

I was under the impression the tax refund belongs to the citizens who overpaid their taxes. With these economic times and lack of jobs it would seem our State Government would find other alternatives...not withhold what is rightfully its citizens!!!
Well I dont know what Ken Lay is talking about as far as there being no delays. I filed my taxes in Jan 2010 and still did not get my refund which is not big enough to make a dent in their budget. Not sure who they paid these refunds to unless they are state officials and their families. Lots of people I know filed around the same time and still have not received their refund..
Let us tell Raleigh that we do not have the money to pay our taxes and we will pay it as soon as we can afford it. Think that will work?? NOT! What makes them think it's OK for them to hold our money????
Good for you my friend! Although the decision was tough, I am sure that you and your family will reap the benefits.
