Moody’s warns of 'social unrest’ as sovereign debt spirals: Britain and other countries with fast-rising government debts must steel themselves for a year in which “social and political cohesiveness” is tested.
In a sombre report on the outlook for next year, the credit rating agency raised the prospect that future tax rises and spending cuts could trigger social unrest in a range of countries from the developing to the developed world.
It said that in the coming years, evidence of social unrest and public tension may become just as important signs of whether a country will be able to adapt as traditional economic metrics.
Signaling that a fiscal crisis remains a possibility for a leading economy, it said that 2010 would be a “tumultuous year for sovereign debt issuers”.
It added that the sheer quantity of debt to be raised by Britain and other leading nations would increase the risk of investor fright.
Strikingly, however, it added that even if countries reached agreement on the depth of the cuts necessary to their budgets, they could face difficulties in carrying out the cuts.
…“In those countries whose debt has increased significantly, and especially those whose debt has become unaffordable, the need to rein in deficits will test social cohesiveness. The test will be starker as growth disappoints and interest rates rise.”
…Greece, where the government has committed to drastic cuts in public expenditure, has suffered a series of riots over the past year which are thought to have been fuelled by economic pressures.

What could happen if a generation of underemployed, underpaid, educated and indebted young adults become disillusioned by their elders’ financial mismanagement and seek to identify and punish those responsible?

I have watched greedy geezers for years demanding more and more from the young and the young giving to grandma and grandpa. I have watched and wondered when the young would look around and say,"Hell no! My kids need shoes and you want my hard earned money so you can summer in Maine and winter in Florida.
I have also pointed out for years that social Security is a Ponzi scheme. When I hear "I paid into social Security for years and i deserve it" I want to shout, "You get back every cent you put into the pot within two years of beginning to collect social Security. After that you are living on the backs of the young workers and their children; you are on Welfare for the Elderly."
When our nation finally admits that Social Security is welfare for the elderly then perhaps it will be means tested as all other welfare is means tested. This also applies to Medicare. In 1965 when Medicare was shoved down the nations throat and no one but a very small handful of us protested, 60% of the elderly could afford and were paying for their own insurance. But Johnson and cohorts wanted to hand their buddies in the insurance business a big fruit pie full of bright red cherries and at the same time make a name and legacy for Lyndon Johnson so these 60% were put on the government dole along with those who needed some help. This then started the double and triple digit rises in the cost of health care and drugs and everything else connected to health care in America. And of course another yoke around the necks of the young.
What has it lead to: generational warfare! Gramps you better get your gun because when young Joe Worker has to choose between you and his kids you can kiss your buns goodbye.
We Americans seem to think there is a pill to help us thru everything And, no one will miss us old coots one bit because all we have been doing for years is voting in jokers who promise us more federal goodies and crying that we can't afford our trips to the casino and our drugs. (Did you know that the average 65 year old and over takes an average of 12 prescriptions daily? That is stupidity! I finally said this is nonsense and tested my drugs by going off of them and seeing if there was any difference in how I felt. I now take only my pain pills (2) for scoliosis and arthritis severe chronic pain, sinus pill (1)for horrid allergy head aches and prescription shampoo for cyrisus. The rest were just putting chemicals in my blood and making the drug companies richer. BB
