For the record: On Tom Phillips and Zach Matheny

The Committee to Elect George Hartzman was unaware of any connection between Tom Phillips, Zack Matheny and Greensboro's Zoning Commission during 2005's election cycle, until August 10, 2009.

The big news from the Greensboro City Council meeting on Tuesday night was what council members didn't do, not what they did.

Councilmember Tom Phillips announced that he didn't intend to run for reelection.

The Phillips' announcement was no surprise. The word on the street two years ago was that Phillips agreed not to run for reelection if Zack Matheny agreed not to run against him in 2005. That was the rumor two years ago, and it appears the rumor may have been true. Wednesday, Matheny announced he was a candidate for the District 3 seat.

Phillips held the District 3 seat from 1989 to 1993. Phillips stepped down in 1993 and Robbie Perkins, who lived across the street from Phillips, won the seat and held it until 2005, when Perkins stepped down and Phillips took it back. So now it is open to someone other than Phillips and Perkins for the first time in 18 years.
