The News & Record's Travis Fain; "outlays for a rental van to drive voters to the polls"

"It’s not like the local political groups for Realtors are totally in the bag for Mayor Robbie Perkins.

The N.C. Realtors PAC gave his opponent, Councilwoman Nancy Vaughan, a $500 campaign donation just last month, even though Perkins is a commercial real estate broker.

Campaign cash score: $40,650 to $500. Advantage: Perkins.

Most of that money came from the N.C. Homeowners Alliance, a local nonprofit that made use of a pass-through donation from the National Association of Realtors. It didn’t give that money to Perkins’ campaign directly, but bought $38,500 worth of mailers to support his candidacy.

...Perkins’ latest filing offers a window into his election day strategy.

He shows outlays for a rental van to drive voters to the polls...

...The candidates in Tuesday’s Greensboro City Council races raised more than $369,000 as of Oct. 21, the latest figures available from the Guilford County Board of Elections.

That doesn’t include outside group spending, like the $47,500 the N.C. Homeowners Alliance spent on mailers for Perkins and Councilman Zack Matheny.

Perkins raised the most by far, topping $106,000. He also relied the most on large donations, with more than $90,000 of his campaign cash coming from donors who gave $500 or more.

Local developer Marty Kotis was the most generous donor during these elections, though his contributions were mostly in-kind. He gave candidates billboard space worth about $14,000.

None of it went to Perkins."
