An idealist candidate decides to run for county commissioner on a fiscally conservative platform.
His/Her opponent, hand picked by his politically powerful predecessor and others who have used legislation and taxpayer money to achieve personal profit, not only receives special interest bundled campaign contributions, but now benefits from hard to trace third and forth party attack ads and mailings disparaging opponents.
Meanwhile, the local mass media industry recognizes that about 75% of their election season ad revenues are received by those with financial interests with the government and who are dependent on the status quo, and reports the pros and cons proportionately to the best interests of the bottom line.
In the end, after the negatives of the incumbent are ignored as the positives of the challenger are downplayed by compromised editorial boards, the powers that be retain power and the apathetic taxpayers watch football as they betray their children’s inheritance by not knowing or not caring enough while their taxes rise and the financial stability of their community disintegrates.
Is this not where most of America lives today?
